The Superior Court of our one-judge county is located in Friday Harbor, on San Juan Island. Generally, the Superior court hears cases where the defendant resides in San Juan County or where the property in dispute is located in San Juan County.

At times, it is necessary to have a judge from a neighboring county such as Skagit, Whatcom or Island County come in sit in Friday Harbor to hear a case. On those days the San Juan County judge will travel to the other county for a reciprocal "judge trade." Except for the transportation expenses, there is other expense for a judge trade.
