Prosecutors Seek Judgeships Around the State

Candidate filings ended yesterday with four elected prosecutors and five deputy prosecutors filing for the superior court judge in their respective counties. I filed in San Juan County for the full-term position. Elected Prosecutor Ron Shepherd filed in a three-way race in Lincoln County, which like San Juan, is a one-judge county. Grant County Prosecutor has filed to fill an open seat. And elected prosecutor Ed Holm has filed against a judge in Thurston County.

Several deputy prosecutors are also seeking a judgeship: Monty Cobb in Mason County, Tim Bradshaw, Gina Cahan and Barb Mackey in King County and Snohomish County Deputy Prosecutor George Appel, son of Waldron resident and attorney Bill Appel.

George's website includes a nice statement from Seth Dawson, former Snohomish County Prosecutor on why experienced prosecutors make good judges:

"George Appel has served as a highly ethical, skilled and effective deputy prosecutor - a quasi judicial position because prosecutors are to seek justice, not just convictions. George would carry those same qualities to the bench and become one of our best Superior Court judges. He earned my confidence as one of my deputies many years ago, and today as a voter."

Also of interest, Craig Platt, former public defender for San Juan County, is challenging Vickie I. Churchill for the Island County Superior Court judge position, her first election since Island and San Juan County were divided into one-county districts.
