July 12: Lopez Market and Waldron Forum

July 12 took me to two islands. First, I walked through the Lopez Market and met many market merchants and shoppers. The Saturday Market on each island has its own identity and Lopez has a vibrant market filled with more than produce. I bought some coffee and jam, items that would travel by boat and biccyle to to my next destination: Waldron Island.

Waldron Island is a non-ferry served island of just under 100 voters. Waldron is not for everyone, but for the people who live there have a love of the place and the desire to protect what makes it so special.

The Waldron Community Meeting of July 12 was the site of the first forum for the judge and council member candidates. The forum was conducted in a shady corner of the school house soccer field. About 30 people from Waldron and Orcas listened attentively as the candidates made remarks and then answered questions.

After the forum we had the chance to enjoy lemonade and cookies while talking to folks with question. Former Orcas School Board Member Susan McCaull was there along with Orcas residents Paul and Tammy Pollard and Josephine Bangs. Thanks to Gretchen Wagner for running a good meeting.
